Heritage Trail, Hudson Valley, NY

Updated: Mar 9, 2024

Orange County’s Heritage Trail is an excellent place to walk or bike with easy to find access points that provide parking. Recently extended, it now spans nearly 20 miles through several local towns including Middletown, Goshen, and Chester. You will find Orange County’s official map here and some of my tips below!

Just a note about the path when you reach the town of Goshen – If you’re coming from the Harriman side, it basically ends at the St. James Place parking lot and picks up again on the edge of the village. Coming from the Middletown side, the end leaves you at a path clearly marked “private property.” Either way, it is pretty confusing to continue on if you don’t know what to expect, so take a look at the map below for directions through town!

Parking:

202 Ryerson Rd, New Hampton, NY 10958 – There is space for about 10 cars with a few parking spaces and a section designated for parallel parking.

99-113 Hartley Rd, Goshen, NY 10924

- 28 St. James Pl, Goshen, NY 10924 but you will need to enter from Bruen Pl on the other side of the block as the lot is one way with diagonal spaces. There is ample parking here but it is especially busy on beautiful days. Municipal parking and street parking are also available throughout the village.

- 19 Winkler Pl, Chester, NY 10918 – Plenty of parking available in a paved lot.

- Millpond Pkwy, Monroe, NY 10950 at Airplane Park

- Monroe Park & Ride Bus Stop, Lot B  near the intersection of Rt. 17-M and Stair Way in Monroe, NY

- Orange Heritage Trail Trailhead at the intersection of River Rd and N. Main St. in Harriman, NY 10926

- According to Orange County’s map, you should be able to find parking at a few additional access points.

Recommendations:

- Use the bathroom before you go. There are porta-potties placed periodically along the route and if you’re stopping at a local eatery you should be able to use their facilities but their locations might not be convenient. (Also, I just can’t with porta- potties so that’s out for me.)

- Make sure to bring water and snacks. It’s easy to plan for a short walk but want to keep going once you’re there.
